 Portsmouth is located in Hampton Roads on the western side of the Elizabeth River, directly across from Norfolk. Portsmouth was originally founded in 1620, as a site for future shipbuilding. Portsmouth offers miles of waterfront property on the Elizabeth River, and is packed with history spanning the last 400 years. Portsmouth is exactly half way from Maine to Florida on the east coast.
